Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesA FutureC+
The Texans let Smith fall into their laps, and walked away with a B.

The one they had to fix is still broken. The Texans left edge rusher untouched, and that omission hangs over an otherwise reasonable haul.

On value alone, Smith makes the weekend a net positive. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same. Running back is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick33 Rnd2 Derrick Harmon
Derrick Harmon in the 33rd pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick58 Rnd2 Donovan Jackson
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Donovan Jackson. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick67 Rnd3 Jaylin Noel
A tidy little value on Jaylin Noel in pick No. 67, a step better than break-even. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick81 Rnd3 Tate Ratledge
Tate Ratledge at Round 3, Pick 17 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick90 Rnd3 Andrew Mukuba
Fair-plus on Andrew Mukuba, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick153 Rnd5 Brashard Smith
Brashard Smith at No. 153 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick166 Rnd5 Kyle Williams
They took Kyle Williams at par in the 166th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick193 Rnd6 Upton Stout
Upton Stout in No. 193 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick236 Rnd7 Craig Woodson
They read the board right and Craig Woodson was the payoff at slot 236. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick241 Rnd7 Dante Trader Jr.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dante Trader Jr. in the 241st pick. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
