Good, not great, for the Texans: B-. The Khalid Duke pick is the one that will follow the Texans into the fall. They took him 25 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The McLachlan pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with running back the one that mattered most.
Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Quinyon Mitchell
In pick No. 23 they get an island corner at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick59
Rnd2
Kris Jenkins
A quiet steal in the 59th overall pick: Kris Jenkins for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick86
Rnd3
Jaylen Wright
Jaylen Wright at No. 86 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick124
Rnd4
Matt Goncalves
A tidy bit of business in the Round 4 slot, where Matt Goncalves graded well above the range. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick128
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
No edge and no loss on Cedric Gray in slot 128; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick236
Rnd7
Tanner McLachlan
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tanner McLachlan at pick 236 is the proof. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick245
Rnd7
Khalid Duke
They left a pile of value on the table to take Khalid Duke this early at Round 7, Pick 25. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick250
Rnd7
Jordan Whittington
Good price on Jordan Whittington in No. 250, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
