The Texans won the night they stopped Stone from sliding. Grade: B. Thirty-one other rooms let David Stone slide, and the Texans were the ones holding the card at the Round 2 slot. Highway robbery. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
They will need Thompson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The phones were where this weekend was really won.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Will Echoles
In the 26th overall pick they get an anchor for the defensive front at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick30
Rnd1
Ahmad Hardy
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get an every-down engine for the run game at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick32
Rnd1
Jordan Seaton
In pick 32 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick37
Rnd2
Trey'Dez Green
They will replay Trey'Dez Green at the 37th pick for years; that is how good the value is. The roster fit checks out.
Pick62
Rnd2
David Stone
David Stone at No. 62 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick68
Rnd3
Omarion Miller
A straight-up fair deal on Omarion Miller at slot 68, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick79
Rnd3
Greg Johnson
A quiet steal in the Round 3 slot: Greg Johnson for less than the market said. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick94
Rnd3
Samson Okunlola
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Samson Okunlola in pick No. 94. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick96
Rnd3
Iapani Laloulu
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Iapani Laloulu. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick105
Rnd4
Josh Hoover
Josh Hoover in the 105th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick163
Rnd5
Jalen Thompson
Jalen Thompson at slot 163 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick169
Rnd5
Justice Haynes
A premium they did not need to pay, Justice Haynes a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick204
Rnd6
Sammy Omosigho
They went early on Sammy Omosigho in Round 6, Pick 23, and the value did not follow. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick239
Rnd7
Chris Marshall
Chris Marshall at the 239th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick251
Rnd7
Boo Carter
They read the board right and Boo Carter was the payoff at pick 251. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
