FutureB
The Texans did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Texans would have aced it. Roman Hemby at pick No. 244 is 113 spots clear of where he belonged. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. On value alone, Stowers makes the weekend a net positive.
The trade work was a quiet net positive.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In the 28th pick they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker. A real need, handled.
Pick47
Rnd2
Christen Miller
The board had Christen Miller higher than the 47th overall pick, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick59
Rnd2
A.J. Haulcy
A.J. Haulcy at Round 2, Pick 27 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick69
Rnd3
Eli Stowers
Eli Stowers is a better player than pick No. 69 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Pick106
Rnd4
Keylan Rutledge
They did well to land Keylan Rutledge in slot 106, just ahead of his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick113
Rnd4
Deion Burks
Deion Burks slid further than he should have, and No. 113 is lovely value for the wide receiver. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick128
Rnd4
Davison Igbinosun
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Davison Igbinosun in slot 128. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick165
Rnd5
Kaleb Proctor
No edge and no loss on Kaleb Proctor in No. 165; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick243
Rnd7
Desmond Reid
A reach for Desmond Reid in the 243rd pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick244
Rnd7
Roman Hemby
They left a pile of value on the table to take Roman Hemby this early at Round 7, Pick 28. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
