Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
B

FutureB-
The Texans let Taaffe fall and pounced. Final grade: B. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Michael Taaffe got past him. The Texans do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 106. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The cost of the Proctor reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
The Texans indulged a want in Taaffe while a need in edge rusher, quarterback and other spots stayed open. Running back is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In pick No. 28 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dillon Thieneman in the 38th pick. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick59
Rnd2
Gennings Dunker
Gennings Dunker slid further than he should have, and No. 59 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick69
Rnd3
Max Iheanachor
Max Iheanachor in pick 69 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick106
Rnd4
Michael Taaffe
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 4, Pick 6 on Michael Taaffe with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Pick141
Rnd5
Kaleb Proctor
Kaleb Proctor at the Round 5 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick167
Rnd5
Jaydn Ott
They went early on Jaydn Ott in slot 167, and the value did not follow. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick243
Rnd7
DJ Harvey
DJ Harvey at the 243rd overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick244
Rnd7
Trebor Pena
A quiet steal in Round 7, Pick 28: Trebor Pena for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
