Romega74 DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedA-
TradesB-
FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the 49ers. There was a run on nobody at that position, and the 49ers started one anyway for Chase Bisontis, 45 picks ahead of schedule.
They banked enough surplus on Lance to cover a lot of smaller sins. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Caleb Lomu
In No. 27 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick58
Rnd2
Chase Bisontis
Chase Bisontis in the 58th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick92
Rnd3
Julian Neal
Value with a capital V on Julian Neal in the Round 3 slot, a genuine coup. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick127
Rnd4
Demond Claiborne
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Demond Claiborne. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick133
Rnd4
Logan Jones
Logan Jones at slot 133 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick138
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
A wide receiver of that caliber at the 138th pick is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick171
Rnd5
Sam Roush
A quiet steal in the 171st overall pick: Sam Roush for less than the market said. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
