Draft Grade — Texans
Overall

FutureC+
The Texans lost the trade table, and the C- tells the story. The Texans torched the value chart for Desmond Watson, taking him 70 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. It washes out to a C-, no better and no worse.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Norman-Lott. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
The Texans indulged a want in Fitzgerald while a need in edge rusher, tight end and other spots stayed open.
Hit on Emeka Egbuka and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Emeka Egbuka
In the Round 1 slot they get a weapon on the perimeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick58
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
They jumped the gun on Donovan Jackson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The roster fit checks out.
Pick75
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo in the 75th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
Pick79
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo at pick 79 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick89
Rnd3
Omarr Norman-Lott
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Omarr Norman-Lott in Round 3, Pick 25. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick100
Rnd3
Ryan Fitzgerald
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, tight end and other spots to take Ryan Fitzgerald, a specialist that was not the priority.
Pick166
Rnd5
Desmond Watson
Desmond Watson at Round 5, Pick 28 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick236
Rnd7
Akili Arnold
Akili Arnold at slot 236 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick241
Rnd7
Brady Cook
Value said wait; Brady Cook in pick No. 241 says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
