The Texans cashed the board's mistake on Smith: D-. The rest of the league will want that one back. Ainias Smith tumbling to the Texans in the Round 7 slot is a gift they did not have to think twice about.
The cost of the Bell reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman still on the board. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
JC Latham
In the 24th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Pick27
Rnd1
Jared Verse
Jared Verse at Round 1, Pick 27 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick33
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
Steal is underselling it; Xavier Legette at the Round 2 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick34
Rnd2
Nate Wiggins
Nate Wiggins at No. 34 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick89
Rnd3
Barrett Carter
The board had Barrett Carter higher than pick 89, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
Pick90
Rnd3
Maason Smith
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 90th overall pick on Maason Smith with interior defensive lineman unsolved.
Pick95
Rnd3
Jaheim Bell
Jaheim Bell at slot 95 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick124
Rnd4
Donovan Jackson
They went early on Donovan Jackson in pick No. 124, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick158
Rnd5
Jo'Quavious Marks
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jo'Quavious Marks in the 158th pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick206
Rnd6
Devontez Walker
Devontez Walker at slot 206 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick240
Rnd7
Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith in No. 240 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick242
Rnd7
Taulia Tagovailoa
A reach for Taulia Tagovailoa in pick No. 242; a little patience would have been rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
