Jed DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
The 49ers cashed the board's mistake on Taylor: B-. The 49ers spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Roc Taylor, the No. 191 name on the board, in the 232nd overall pick. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
The Membou pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Armand Membou
In pick No. 11 they get an anchor for the offensive line, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
By-the-book stuff, Jihaad Campbell at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick75
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins at the 75th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick99
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
Andrew Mukuba at No. 99 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick112
Rnd4
Donovan Jackson
They will replay Donovan Jackson at pick 112 for years; that is how good the value is. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick138
Rnd4
Tory Horton
They barely believed it either: Tory Horton still on the board at the 138th overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick139
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander is a better player than slot 139 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick148
Rnd5
O'Donnell Fortune
Taking O'Donnell Fortune in Round 5, Pick 9 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick189
Rnd6
DJ Giddens
DJ Giddens in pick No. 189 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick228
Rnd7
Trevor Etienne
Value with a capital V on Trevor Etienne in Round 7, Pick 10, a genuine coup. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick232
Rnd7
Roc Taylor
Roc Taylor at the 232nd overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick255
Rnd7
Sam Brown
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Sam Brown in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
