Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
B
ValueA-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Steelers let McGowan fall and pounced. Final grade: B. Thirty-one other rooms let Seth McGowan slide, and the Steelers were the ones holding the card at the Round 7 slot. Highway robbery. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They left with quarterback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. The skill positions did well by the weekend.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Carnell Tate
In No. 21 they get a difference-maker at receiver at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Pick53
Rnd2
Akheem Mesidor
The board had Akheem Mesidor higher than the 53rd overall pick, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick76
Rnd3
Garrett Nussmeier
They took Garrett Nussmeier at par in pick 76, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick85
Rnd3
Derrick Moore
Steal is underselling it; Derrick Moore at the Round 3 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick99
Rnd3
Elijah Sarratt
Elijah Sarratt at Round 3, Pick 35 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick121
Rnd4
Logan Jones
Logan Jones in the 121st pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick135
Rnd4
Emmett Johnson
Emmett Johnson at slot 135 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick161
Rnd5
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at pick No. 161 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick216
Rnd6
Aaron Anderson
The board fumbled Aaron Anderson all the way to slot 216, and they scooped it up. The roster fit checks out.
Pick224
Rnd7
Seth McGowan
Taking Seth McGowan in the Round 7 slot is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick230
Rnd7
J'Mari Taylor
Somehow J'Mari Taylor was still sitting there in Round 7, Pick 14, and they pounced on premier running back value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick237
Rnd7
Cole Payton
A top-tier quarterback at a bargain, Cole Payton in the 237th overall pick, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
