Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall

FutureA+
The Commanders won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B+. The Kalil Alexander pick is the one that will follow the Commanders into the fall. They took him 71 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The Commanders paired the rookies with proven help, Xavier Worthy leading the way. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick48
Rnd2
Caleb Lomu
Nothing to complain about; Caleb Lomu went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick58
Rnd2
Ja'Kobi Lane
A reasonable price with a little left over, Ja'Kobi Lane in No. 58. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick81
Rnd3
Zion Young
They paid a round early for Zion Young in Round 3, Pick 17, more than the board wanted. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick92
Rnd3
Harold Perkins Jr.
Harold Perkins Jr. in slot 92 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick142
Rnd5
Vincent Anthony Jr.
They talked themselves into Vincent Anthony Jr. at pick 142, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick149
Rnd5
Eric O'Neill
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Eric O'Neill. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick187
Rnd6
Kalil Alexander
Kalil Alexander at the 187th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick204
Rnd6
Bear Alexander
Bear Alexander at the Round 6 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick223
Rnd7
Fernando Carmona
Value said wait; Fernando Carmona in Round 7, Pick 9 says they were not listening. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
