Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB- TradesC+ FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Bengals a B-.

Some picks age like wine; James Smith at the Round 6 slot will need to, sitting 38 spots clear of his grade. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. With cornerback, tight end and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on edge rusher is the choice that costs them. Coleman at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

Interior defensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick Analysis
Pick8 Rnd1 Keldric Faulk
In the 8th pick they get juice off the edge. Need was not the driver here.
Pick41 Rnd2 Jake Slaughter
Jake Slaughter at No. 41 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It fills a real need, too.
Pick72 Rnd3 Jonah Coleman
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jonah Coleman at the 72nd overall pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick109 Rnd4 Akheem Mesidor
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Akheem Mesidor at edge rusher with cornerback, tight end and other spots open.
Pick198 Rnd6 James Smith
They reached into another round for James Smith, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick222 Rnd7 Pat Coogan
Pat Coogan at Round 7, Pick 8 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
