Grand theft in Round 5, Pick 28: the Bengals steal Mertz and grade out a D. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Bengals shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
They banked enough surplus on Mertz to cover a lot of smaller sins. The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, cornerback very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Tetairoa McMillan
In No. 14 they get a matchup problem out wide. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick28
Rnd1
Kelvin Banks Jr.
In the 28th overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick60
Rnd2
Earnest Greene III
A straight-up fair deal on Earnest Greene III at the Round 2 slot, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
Pick92
Rnd3
Nic Anderson
Nic Anderson slid further than he should have, and the 92nd pick is lovely value for the wide receiver. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick124
Rnd4
Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles in pick 124 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick156
Rnd5
Graham Mertz
Graham Mertz at pick No. 156 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick188
Rnd6
Hunter Wohler
They read the board right and Hunter Wohler was the payoff at the 188th overall pick. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick220
Rnd7
Xavier Truss
A quiet steal in pick No. 220: Xavier Truss for less than the market said. A need, and now a little less of one.
