Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
The Patriots let Coleman fall and pounced. Final grade: B-.

You could see the war room lean forward. Jonah Coleman at No. 95 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Reaching for Pregnon left real value on the table behind him.

Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered. The offense got the lion's share of the attention.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Emmanuel Pregnon
They paid up for Emmanuel Pregnon at the 31st overall pick when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick63 Rnd2 Jake Golday
Jake Golday at pick 63 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick95 Rnd3 Jonah Coleman
They will replay Jonah Coleman at Round 3, Pick 31 for years; that is how good the value is. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick125 Rnd4 Jude Bowry
Jude Bowry in the Round 4 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick131 Rnd4 Joe Royer
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Joe Royer at slot 131 is the proof. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick171 Rnd5 Ted Hurst
Ted Hurst in No. 171 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick191 Rnd6 VJ Payne
They took VJ Payne at par in pick No. 191, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick202 Rnd6 Pat Coogan
A tidy little value on Pat Coogan in the 202nd pick, a step better than break-even. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick209 Rnd6 Keyshaun Elliott
A straight-up fair deal on Keyshaun Elliott at pick 209, value and slot in agreement. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick212 Rnd6 Jeff Caldwell
They liked Jeff Caldwell enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 212. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick247 Rnd7 Miles Kitselman
Miles Kitselman at Round 7, Pick 31 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster fit checks out.
