BisTabi DRAFTING FOR THEJaguars
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Jaguars
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Jaguars finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a B-. The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Jaguars spent their marquee pick on Cam Ward, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
They will need Borregales to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Johnson at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
It is not that Borregales is a bad player; it is that the Jaguars had louder needs to answer first. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick5
Rnd1
Cam Ward
In the 5th pick they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
Pick36
Rnd2
Wyatt Milum
Wyatt Milum in pick No. 36 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick70
Rnd3
Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick88
Rnd3
Smael Mondon Jr.
Value said wait; Smael Mondon Jr. in pick 88 says they were not listening. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick107
Rnd4
Andres Borregales
A curious use of slot 107. Interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots needed the pick; a specialist in Andres Borregales did not.
Pick126
Rnd4
Tez Johnson
Circle this one: Tez Johnson at No. 126 is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick142
Rnd5
Kobe King
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kobe King in the 142nd overall pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick182
Rnd6
Jack Nelson
Fair-plus on Jack Nelson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick194
Rnd6
Alex Mastromanno
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Alex Mastromanno. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick221
Rnd7
Caleb Ransaw
A tidy bit of business in Round 7, Pick 5, where Caleb Ransaw graded well above the range. It fills a real need, too.
