BisTabi DRAFTING FOR THEBrowns
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Browns
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Browns a B-. You can hear the double-takes from here. The Browns took Tyler Baron at No. 104, roughly 51 spots before his name belonged.
On value alone, Sampson makes the weekend a net positive. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up.
Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
James Pearce Jr.
In the Round 1 slot they get a premier pass rusher, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
Nothing to complain about; Malaki Starks went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick67
Rnd3
Jalen Milroe
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jalen Milroe in the 67th overall pick, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick94
Rnd3
Dylan Sampson
Dylan Sampson at pick 94 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick104
Rnd4
Tyler Baron
Tyler Baron at No. 104 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick179
Rnd6
RJ Oben
They left a pile of value on the table to take RJ Oben this early at the 179th pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick192
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dont'e Thornton Jr. at pick No. 192. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick200
Rnd6
Alex Mastromanno
A big swing on Alex Mastromanno at Round 6, Pick 24, well ahead of any board in the building. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick216
Rnd6
Tahj Brooks
Somehow Tahj Brooks was still sitting there in slot 216, and they pounced on premier running back value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick255
Rnd7
Collin Oliver
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Collin Oliver well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
