Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
The 49ers let McClellan fall and pounced. Final grade: B.

Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jase McClellan got past him. The 49ers do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 232. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.

The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.

Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Graham Barton
In pick 31 they get a blindside protector. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick63 Rnd2 Max Melton
A straight-up fair deal on Max Melton at the 63rd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick94 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Brenden Rice. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick124 Rnd4 Renardo Green
Renardo Green in No. 124 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick131 Rnd4 McKinnley Jackson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, McKinnley Jackson at Round 4, Pick 31. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick133 Rnd4 Ben Sinnott
No edge and no loss on Ben Sinnott in the 133rd pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick176 Rnd6 Layden Robinson
Layden Robinson at slot 176 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick211 Rnd6 Walter Rouse
The board fumbled Walter Rouse all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick215 Rnd6 Dwight McGlothern
They barely believed it either: Dwight McGlothern still on the board at Round 6, Pick 40. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick232 Rnd7 Jase McClellan
They will replay Jase McClellan at pick No. 232 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick251 Rnd7 Carter Bradley
They took Carter Bradley at par in the 251st pick, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
