Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
Larceny in the 251st overall pick lands the 49ers a B, Gore Jr. and all.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The 49ers watched Frank Gore Jr. slide 22 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The Hampton pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.

They trusted the board more than the depth chart.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Troy Fautanu
In pick 31 they get a cornerstone up front, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick63 Rnd2 Chris Braswell
Somehow Chris Braswell was still sitting there in Round 2, Pick 31, and they pounced on premier edge rusher value. The roster fit checks out.
Pick94 Rnd3 Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni at the Round 3 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick124 Rnd4 Elijah Jones
They let Elijah Jones come to them and pounced at pick No. 124. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick131 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray in the 131st pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick133 Rnd4 Luke McCaffrey
They paid a round early for Luke McCaffrey in No. 133, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick176 Rnd6 Jared Wiley
Jared Wiley at slot 176 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick211 Rnd6 M.J. Devonshire
M.J. Devonshire in the 211th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick215 Rnd6 Dominique Hampton
Dominique Hampton at No. 215 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick251 Rnd7 Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. in Round 7, Pick 31 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
