Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall B+
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesA+ FutureA-
The Panthers worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+.

Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Panthers spent No. 163 on Luke Lachey, a name most had 45 spots down the list.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. That offensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Getting Watts where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

Good work on the whole, with offensive lineman the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick17 Rnd1 Jalon Walker
No drama and no debate, Jalon Walker went about where he belonged in slot 17. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick45 Rnd2 JT Tuimoloau
JT Tuimoloau in pick No. 45 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick57 Rnd2 Xavier Watts
Xavier Watts is a better player than the Round 2 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick74 Rnd3 Deone Walker
A reach for Deone Walker in Round 3, Pick 10; a little patience would have been rewarded. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick111 Rnd4 Lathan Ransom
Value with a capital V on Lathan Ransom in the 111th pick, a genuine coup. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick114 Rnd4 Dorian Strong
They went early on Dorian Strong in pick 114, and the value did not follow. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick140 Rnd5 Kyle Williams
Kyle Williams at the Round 5 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick146 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A big swing on Dont'e Thornton Jr. at Round 5, Pick 8, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick163 Rnd5 Luke Lachey
A wild overpay on Luke Lachey in pick No. 163, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick230 Rnd7 Desmond Watson
Desmond Watson at the 230th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
