4D9RZ DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueC
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the 49ers: B-. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Cedric Gray at Round 3, Pick 35, a reach of 37 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Baker. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
Tyler Guyton
In the 32nd overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line, though they paid up to get him. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick64
Rnd2
Mekhi Wingo
They took Mekhi Wingo at par in pick 64, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick95
Rnd3
Leonard Taylor III
A conviction pick on Leonard Taylor III at No. 95 that the board grades a round light. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick98
Rnd3
Cedric Gray
They reached into another round for Cedric Gray, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick132
Rnd4
Javon Foster
Fair-plus on Javon Foster, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick177
Rnd6
Curtis Jacobs
Curtis Jacobs in the Round 6 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick210
Rnd6
Javon Baker
Javon Baker in the Round 6 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick213
Rnd6
Kingsley Eguakun
Kingsley Eguakun at Round 6, Pick 38 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick215
Rnd6
Joshua Cephus
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Joshua Cephus. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick253
Rnd7
Josh Williams
A real head-scratcher, Josh Williams in the 253rd overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
