Draft Grade — 49ers

The phones sank the 49ers this weekend: D-.

Boards are made to be trusted, and the 49ers shredded theirs for Darius Muasau. He came off 39 spots early, and the room will hear about it.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want. On value alone, Smith makes the weekend a net positive.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, running back very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick35 Rnd2 Darius Robinson
A straight-up fair deal on Darius Robinson at No. 35, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick39 Rnd2 Ruke Orhorhoro
They liked Ruke Orhorhoro enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 39. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick47 Rnd2 T.J. Tampa
By-the-book stuff, T.J. Tampa at the 47th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick63 Rnd2 Zach Frazier
Zach Frazier in the 63rd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick70 Rnd3 Dominick Puni
They reached a country mile for Dominick Puni at pick No. 70, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick90 Rnd3 Malik Washington
They paid a round early for Malik Washington in slot 90, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick94 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice at slot 94 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick98 Rnd3 Christian Mahogany
Christian Mahogany in the 98th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick125 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
They took Cedric Gray at par in No. 125, which is nothing to complain about. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick132 Rnd4 Christian Jones
They paid sticker price for Christian Jones in the 132nd pick, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick161 Rnd5 Ainias Smith
Somehow Ainias Smith was still sitting there in Round 5, Pick 25, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick176 Rnd6 Khristian Boyd
No edge and no loss on Khristian Boyd in pick 176; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick209 Rnd6 Gabe Hall
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Gabe Hall. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick214 Rnd6 Myles Harden
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Myles Harden in pick No. 214, plain and simple. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick215 Rnd6 Tip Reiman
They went early on Tip Reiman in the Round 6 slot, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick249 Rnd7 Darius Muasau
This one needs a full-page explanation: Darius Muasau in slot 249, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
