Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D-
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesF FutureB
The 49ers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-.

When the story of this class is written, it opens with Marcus Harris at the 214th overall pick, a reach of 42 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. It grades a D-, and the process earned it.

The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Spending an early pick on cornerback with quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick10 Rnd1 JC Latham
In No. 10 they get a blindside protector, though they paid up to get him. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick45 Rnd2 Graham Barton
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Graham Barton. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick63 Rnd2 Javon Bullard
No edge and no loss on Javon Bullard in the 63rd pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick72 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice in pick No. 72 lands just on the right side of the ledger. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick88 Rnd3 Josh Newton
A tidy little value on Josh Newton in slot 88, a step better than break-even. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick94 Rnd3 DJ James
A want over a need in the 94th overall pick: DJ James adds a cornerback while quarterback keeps waiting.
Pick98 Rnd3 Tyler Davis
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tyler Davis in Round 3, Pick 35. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick122 Rnd4 Malik Washington
Malik Washington at the 122nd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick126 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray at pick No. 126 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick132 Rnd4 Khristian Boyd
They reached a country mile for Khristian Boyd at No. 132, and the board is aghast. It fills a real need, too.
Pick168 Rnd5 Brennan Jackson
A reach for Brennan Jackson in slot 168; a little patience would have been rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick174 Rnd5 Delmar Glaze
They paid sticker price for Delmar Glaze in the Round 5 slot, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick176 Rnd6 Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. at the 176th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick209 Rnd6 Brian Ugwu
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Brian Ugwu. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick214 Rnd6 Marcus Harris
A wild overpay on Marcus Harris in the 214th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick215 Rnd6 Christian Jones
Christian Jones at pick No. 215 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick216 Rnd6 Jared Wiley
A straight-up fair deal on Jared Wiley at pick 216, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick249 Rnd7 Zakhari Franklin
By-the-book stuff, Zakhari Franklin at Round 7, Pick 29 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
