Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D-
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The 49ers lost the trade table, and the D- tells the story.

The 49ers treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending pick No. 209 on Matthew Jones a full 51 spots early. Put together, it is a D-.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. With running back and quarterback unsolved, spending premium capital on DT-EDGE is the choice that costs them. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

The Jones pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.

It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 JC Latham
In No. 18 they get a long-term starter on the line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick31 Rnd1 Byron Murphy II
In pick No. 31 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick49 Rnd2 Chris Braswell
They went early on Chris Braswell in the 49th pick, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick63 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
Fair-plus on Edgerrin Cooper, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The roster fit checks out.
Pick75 Rnd3 Javon Bullard
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Javon Bullard at the 75th overall pick. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick80 Rnd3 Christian Haynes
A tidy little value on Christian Haynes in Round 3, Pick 16, a step better than break-even. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick94 Rnd3 Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at pick 94 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick98 Rnd3 Maason Smith
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with running back and quarterback open.
Pick132 Rnd4 Ben Sinnott
A premium they did not need to pay, Ben Sinnott a notch or two before his time. It fills a real need, too.
Pick176 Rnd6 Kamal Hadden
The board fumbled Kamal Hadden all the way to No. 176, and they scooped it up. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick209 Rnd6 Matthew Jones
They talked themselves into Matthew Jones at pick No. 209, and the board did not agree. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick214 Rnd6 Gabe Hall
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Gabe Hall. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick215 Rnd6 J.J. Weaver
A swing that ignored the value entirely, J.J. Weaver well ahead of where he belonged. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick235 Rnd7 Xavier Thomas
They reached into another round for Xavier Thomas, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick249 Rnd7 Christian Jones
Christian Jones at No. 249 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
