Draft Grade — Texans
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesF FutureB-
The Texans lost the trade table, and the D- tells the story.

The Texans lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.

Reaching for Eichenberg left real value on the table behind him. Getting Jones where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Adding Trey Smith by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.

They went 8 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick Analysis
Pick42 Rnd2 Adonai Mitchell
Adonai Mitchell in the 42nd pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick59 Rnd2 T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat is a better player than Round 2, Pick 27 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick63 Rnd2 Bralen Trice
Bralen Trice at slot 63 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick64 Rnd2 Jaylen Wright
They paid sticker price for Jaylen Wright in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick86 Rnd3 Christian Mahogany
A reach for Christian Mahogany in pick 86; a little patience would have been rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Pick94 Rnd3 Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson at the 94th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick95 Rnd3 Dominick Puni
A clean, defensible pick in No. 95 with a little surplus value in Dominick Puni. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick123 Rnd4 James Williams
James Williams in pick No. 123 is fair value, right on his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick124 Rnd4 Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott in the Round 4 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick127 Rnd4 Tommy Eichenberg
They talked themselves into Tommy Eichenberg at the 127th pick, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick132 Rnd4 Elijah Jones
Elijah Jones at pick 132 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick188 Rnd6 Joe Milton III
A reach on Joe Milton III in slot 188; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick247 Rnd7 Jalen Coker
They took Jalen Coker at par in No. 247, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
