Draft Grade — 49ers

The 49ers checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. Boards are made to be trusted, and the 49ers shredded theirs for Xavier Truss. He came off 45 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
That Warren pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
James Pearce Jr.
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get juice off the edge. A real need, handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren in No. 43 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick75
Rnd3
Barrett Carter
By-the-book stuff, Barrett Carter at slot 75 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick100
Rnd3
Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander in pick 100 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick113
Rnd4
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo in the 113th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick138
Rnd4
Willie Lampkin
They left a pile of value on the table to take Willie Lampkin this early at pick No. 138. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick147
Rnd5
Pat Bryant
They took Pat Bryant at par in Round 5, Pick 9, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick160
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
A wild overpay on JJ Pegues in the 160th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick227
Rnd7
Jordan Hancock
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jordan Hancock at the 227th pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick249
Rnd7
Xavier Truss
This one needs a full-page explanation: Xavier Truss in slot 249, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick252
Rnd7
LaJohntay Wester
Nothing to complain about; LaJohntay Wester went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
