The steal of the weekend belongs to the Bills and McCord: B-. The Bills did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Kyle McCord fell into slot 179.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped linebacker, which is a strange place to end up. They are betting Hairston proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
They trusted the board more than the depth chart.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In the 30th overall pick they get a disruptive interior force, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick56
Rnd2
Maxwell Hairston
A real head-scratcher, Maxwell Hairston in slot 56 is miles ahead of his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick62
Rnd2
Quinshon Judkins
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Quinshon Judkins. It fills a real need, too.
Pick74
Rnd3
Jack Bech
They let Jack Bech come to them and pounced at pick No. 74. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick108
Rnd4
Andrew Mukuba
Circle this one: Andrew Mukuba at No. 108 is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick131
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
Nothing to complain about; Darius Alexander went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick171
Rnd5
Bhayshul Tuten
A running back of that caliber at the Round 5 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick175
Rnd5
Jack Nelson
Jack Nelson at Round 5, Pick 36 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick179
Rnd6
Kyle McCord
Steal is underselling it; Kyle McCord at slot 179 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick206
Rnd6
KeAndre Lambert-Smith
A quiet steal in the 206th overall pick: KeAndre Lambert-Smith for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
