Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall D-
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The Steelers found their guy under center in McCarthy: D-.

The phones were a trap the Steelers kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.

J.J. McCarthy is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Spending an early pick on offensive lineman with safety, edge rusher and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up. They will need Goncalves to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

Getting Hadden where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.

Pick Analysis
Pick27 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
Good price on J.J. McCarthy in slot 27, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick51 Rnd2 T.J. Tampa
T.J. Tampa in pick No. 51 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick57 Rnd2 Zach Frazier
Zach Frazier at pick 57 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick66 Rnd3 Xavier Worthy
The board had Xavier Worthy higher than Round 3, Pick 2, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick98 Rnd3 Matt Goncalves
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went offensive lineman with Matt Goncalves while clear needs at safety, edge rusher and other spots sat open.
Pick119 Rnd4 Maason Smith
Maason Smith at the Round 4 slot is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick134 Rnd4 Christian Jones
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Christian Jones at offensive lineman with safety, edge rusher and other spots open.
Pick170 Rnd5 Luke McCaffrey
They will replay Luke McCaffrey at the 170th pick for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
Pick195 Rnd6 Kamal Hadden
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Kamal Hadden in the 195th pick, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick200 Rnd6 Erick All
No drama and no debate, Erick All went about where he belonged in the Round 6 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
