Kotes DRAFTING FOR THECowboys
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
B
ValueA-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
Majors should have been long gone. The Cowboys pounced, and earned a B. The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Cowboys watched Jake Majors slide 75 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
If Caldwell pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In Round 1, Pick 14 they get a bell-cow for the offense at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick45
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
Kenneth Grant at slot 45 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick76
Rnd3
Jihaad Campbell
They barely believed it either: Jihaad Campbell still on the board at the 76th overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick151
Rnd5
Kevin Winston Jr.
Taking Kevin Winston Jr. in No. 151 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick168
Rnd5
Jay Higgins
The board fumbled Jay Higgins all the way to pick No. 168, and they scooped it up. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick170
Rnd5
Jake Majors
Somehow Jake Majors was still sitting there in pick 170, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick171
Rnd5
Tahj Brooks
Tahj Brooks in the 171st pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It fills a real need, too.
Pick189
Rnd6
DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell at the Round 6 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick209
Rnd6
Shilo Sanders
A wild overpay on Shilo Sanders in pick 209, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick248
Rnd7
Jamaree Caldwell
Jamaree Caldwell at the 248th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
