Draft Grade — Steelers

FutureA+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Steelers to a C+. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Steelers would have aced it. Kamran James at No. 224 is 126 spots clear of where he belonged. A weekend of give and take that grades a C+.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Bell. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick Analysis
Pick53
Rnd2
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
Value with a capital V on Emmanuel McNeil-Warren in No. 53, a genuine coup. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick85
Rnd3
Germie Bernard
Germie Bernard in Round 3, Pick 21 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick99
Rnd3
Treydan Stukes
The board fumbled Treydan Stukes all the way to the 99th pick, and they scooped it up. The roster fit checks out.
Pick116
Rnd4
Skyler Bell
A wide receiver of that caliber at slot 116 is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick121
Rnd4
Dametrious Crownover
They reached into another round for Dametrious Crownover, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick161
Rnd5
Beau Stephens
Beau Stephens at pick 161 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick216
Rnd6
David Gusta
David Gusta at the 216th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick224
Rnd7
Kamran James
A big swing on Kamran James at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick230
Rnd7
Will Kacmarek
Will Kacmarek at No. 230 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
Pick237
Rnd7
Lander Barton
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Lander Barton. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
