JWL DRAFTING FOR THEBears

Draft Grade — Bears

FutureA+
Nobody dealt better than the Bears this weekend: A-. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Bears would have aced it. Nick Martin at the Round 7 slot is 43 spots clear of where he belonged. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A- to cap it.
Getting Trapilo where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Trust the process, because this time the process plainly worked.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Armand Membou
In Round 1, Pick 17 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value.
Pick20
Rnd1
Jalon Walker
In the 20th overall pick they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
Omarion Hampton in pick 35 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick39
Rnd2
Derrick Harmon
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Derrick Harmon at the Round 2 slot is the proof. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick41
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
They read the board right and Malaki Starks was the payoff at No. 41. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick72
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jayden Higgins in the 72nd pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick122
Rnd4
Ozzy Trapilo
You do not let an offensive lineman like Ozzy Trapilo reach Round 4, Pick 20 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick148
Rnd5
Bhayshul Tuten
Bhayshul Tuten in the Round 5 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick233
Rnd7
Nick Martin
They reached into another round for Nick Martin, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It fills a real need, too.
Pick240
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
Good price on Isaac TeSlaa in pick No. 240, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
