Mafah should have been long gone. The Steelers pounced, and earned a B-.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Steelers watched Phil Mafah slide 64 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.

With safety, edge rusher and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on offensive lineman is the choice that costs them. The cost of the Hemingway reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Emeka Egbuka
In pick 21 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick52 Rnd2 Aireontae Ersery
They did well to land Aireontae Ersery in slot 52, just ahead of his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick83 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Donovan Jackson at offensive lineman with safety, edge rusher and other spots open.
Pick122 Rnd4 Will Howard
Steal is underselling it; Will Howard at the 122nd overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick163 Rnd5 Cody Simon
A linebacker of that caliber at the Round 5 slot is the definition of value, full stop. The roster fit checks out.
Pick225 Rnd7 Tonka Hemingway
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tonka Hemingway well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick231 Rnd7 Phil Mafah
You do not let a running back like Phil Mafah reach pick No. 231 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick247 Rnd7 Mac McWilliams
Mac McWilliams at the 247th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
