Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall D
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The Steelers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D.

The trade table was where it all came apart. The Steelers shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. A D that will need time and luck to look better.

The Thornton Jr. pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. On value alone, Howard makes the weekend a net positive.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick22 Rnd1 Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren at pick No. 22 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick36 Rnd2 Walter Nolen
Walter Nolen at pick 36 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick45 Rnd2 Omarion Hampton
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Omarion Hampton in the Round 2 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick83 Rnd3 Savion Williams
A reach for Savion Williams in the 83rd pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick86 Rnd3 Jalen Milroe
They went early on Jalen Milroe in slot 86, and the value did not follow. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick117 Rnd4 Lathan Ransom
Lathan Ransom in Round 4, Pick 15 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick123 Rnd4 Will Howard
You do not let a quarterback like Will Howard reach the 123rd overall pick and blink. They did not. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick156 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A wild overpay on Dont'e Thornton Jr. in No. 156, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick185 Rnd6 CJ West
No edge and no loss on CJ West in the 185th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick199 Rnd6 Jarquez Hunter
Jarquez Hunter is a better player than No. 199 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick229 Rnd7 Isaac TeSlaa
By-the-book stuff, Isaac TeSlaa at Round 7, Pick 13 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick256 Rnd7 Donovan Smith
The board had cheaper options than Donovan Smith at the Round 7 slot, and it noticed. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
