FutureC+
The Steelers bled value on every deal, hence the D-. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Steelers did exactly that with Tyler Batty in No. 192.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through safety. On value alone, Alexander makes the weekend a net positive.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and safety is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Tetairoa McMillan
In No. 21 they get a go-to option on the outside, and a steal at that.
Pick27
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tyler Warren at pick 27 is the proof. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick36
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
Kenneth Grant in Round 2, Pick 4 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick83
Rnd3
Jalen Milroe
Jalen Milroe at the Round 3 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick90
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
This one needs a full-page explanation: Cam Skattebo in the 90th overall pick, miles early. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick94
Rnd3
David Walker
The board had cheaper options than David Walker at the 94th pick, and it noticed. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick123
Rnd4
Zy Alexander
Zy Alexander in the Round 4 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick125
Rnd4
Rylie Mills
A premium they did not need to pay, Rylie Mills a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick156
Rnd5
DJ Giddens
They jumped the gun on DJ Giddens, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick179
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dont'e Thornton Jr.. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick185
Rnd6
Ajani Cornelius
A tidy bit of business in the 185th overall pick, where Ajani Cornelius graded well above the range. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick192
Rnd6
Tyler Batty
Value said wait; Tyler Batty in No. 192 says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick229
Rnd7
Desmond Watson
A straight-up fair deal on Desmond Watson at slot 229, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
