The Steelers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-. Boards are made to be trusted, and the Steelers shredded theirs for Trinidad Chambliss. He came off 47 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Getting Banks where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Denzel Boston
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get a go-to option on the outside. A real need, handled.
Pick31
Rnd1
Kenyon Sadiq
In pick 31 they get a red-zone target to build around at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick53
Rnd2
Caleb Banks
They will replay Caleb Banks at slot 53 for years; that is how good the value is. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick66
Rnd3
Josiah Trotter
No drama and no debate, Josiah Trotter went about where he belonged in No. 66. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick71
Rnd3
Trinidad Chambliss
A big swing on Trinidad Chambliss at pick No. 71, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick74
Rnd3
Jadarian Price
Jadarian Price at the 74th overall pick is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. The roster fit checks out.
Pick76
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
Zakee Wheatley at pick No. 76 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick85
Rnd3
Taurean York
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Taurean York at pick 85. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick108
Rnd4
Caden Curry
Caden Curry at Round 4, Pick 8 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick135
Rnd4
Chase Roberts
A reach on Chase Roberts in the Round 4 slot; the board had better options right there. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick159
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
A tidy bit of business in slot 159, where Davison Igbinosun graded well above the range. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick213
Rnd6
London Humphreys
London Humphreys in the 213th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick214
Rnd6
Dominic Zvada
They talked themselves into Dominic Zvada at the 214th pick, and the board did not agree. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick224
Rnd7
Jacobe Johnson
No edge and no loss on Jacobe Johnson in No. 224; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick237
Rnd7
Haynes King
Haynes King at No. 237 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
