Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall C
ValueD- NeedB- TradesB- FutureB-
The Steelers land in the muddy middle: C.

The Steelers did not so much draft Gabriel Rubio as overpay for him, 186 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.

It is not that Farmer is a bad player; it is that the Steelers had louder needs to answer first. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.

Hit on Max Iheanachor and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Max Iheanachor
In the 21st overall pick they get a cornerstone up front, though the board says they badly overpaid. Need was not the driver here.
Pick47 Rnd2 Germie Bernard
The board had cheaper options than Germie Bernard at the 47th pick, and it noticed. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick76 Rnd3 Drew Allar
Drew Allar at pick No. 76 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick85 Rnd3 Daylen Everette
Daylen Everette at No. 85 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick99 Rnd3 Jalen Farmer
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, linebacker and other spots to take Jalen Farmer, an offensive lineman that was not the priority.
Pick121 Rnd4 Kaden Wetjen
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kaden Wetjen in pick 121, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick161 Rnd5 Riley Nowakowski
They talked themselves into Riley Nowakowski at the 161st pick, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
Pick216 Rnd6 Gabriel Rubio
They reached a country mile for Gabriel Rubio at the 216th overall pick, and the board is aghast. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick224 Rnd7 Robert Spears-Jennings
They jumped the gun on Robert Spears-Jennings, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick230 Rnd7 Eli Heidenreich
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Eli Heidenreich. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
