Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Steelers.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Steelers did exactly that with Will Kacmarek in the Round 7 slot.

Scott at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. For all the activity, linebacker went untouched, which is hard to explain.

They went 8 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Olaivavega Ioane
Olaivavega Ioane at pick No. 21 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick43 Rnd2 Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
A reasonable price with a little left over, Emmanuel McNeil-Warren in the Round 2 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick76 Rnd3 Zachariah Branch
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Zachariah Branch in pick 76. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick85 Rnd3 Domonique Orange
Domonique Orange slid further than he should have, and the 85th pick is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick99 Rnd3 Keionte Scott
Somehow Keionte Scott was still sitting there in No. 99, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick121 Rnd4 Drew Allar
They talked themselves into Drew Allar at slot 121, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick161 Rnd5 Beau Stephens
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Beau Stephens. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick216 Rnd6 Kaelon Black
They went early on Kaelon Black in the Round 6 slot, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick224 Rnd7 Jack Pyburn
A wild overpay on Jack Pyburn in pick No. 224, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick230 Rnd7 Harrison Wallace III
Harrison Wallace III slipping to pick 230 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick237 Rnd7 Will Kacmarek
A real head-scratcher, Will Kacmarek in the 237th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
