FutureB
A passer of the future in Mateer, and a D, for the Steelers. The Steelers went off the board in a big way for Tristan Leigh, 30 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Everything downstream of John Mateer depends on John Mateer, and the building knows it. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Getting Wisner where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
A straight-up fair deal on Caleb Downs at pick No. 1, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick30
Rnd1
John Mateer
John Mateer in No. 30 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick62
Rnd2
Antonio Williams
They jumped the gun on Antonio Williams, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick94
Rnd3
Harold Perkins Jr.
A reach for Harold Perkins Jr. in pick 94; a little patience would have been rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick130
Rnd4
Jalon Kilgore
They let Jalon Kilgore come to them and pounced at Round 4, Pick 30. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick133
Rnd4
Parker Brailsford
A tidy little value on Parker Brailsford in slot 133, a step better than break-even. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick171
Rnd5
Earnest Greene III
Earnest Greene III at pick No. 171 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick210
Rnd6
Tristan Leigh
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tristan Leigh well ahead of where he belonged. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick216
Rnd6
Quintrevion Wisner
Quintrevion Wisner in the 216th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick247
Rnd7
Jerry Wilson
Nice patience on Jerry Wilson, who had no business lasting to the Round 7 slot. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
