Larceny in slot 244 lands the Steelers a B, Whittington and all. The board owed the Steelers one, and it paid up: Jordan Whittington, the No. 199 name on the board, sitting there at pick 244 like a gift left on the doorstep. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
The Fautanu pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
They went 3 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Taliese Fuaga
In pick No. 28 they get protection for the quarterback. More want than need.
Pick55
Rnd2
Denzel Burke
No edge and no loss on Denzel Burke in the 55th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick113
Rnd4
Max Melton
They let Max Melton come to them and pounced at No. 113. It fills a real need, too.
Pick120
Rnd4
Jalen McMillan
Jalen McMillan slipping to the 120th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick123
Rnd4
Troy Fautanu
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Troy Fautanu adds an offensive lineman and leaves quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots untouched.
Pick201
Rnd6
Steve Linton
They robbed the room for Steve Linton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick244
Rnd7
Jordan Whittington
Jordan Whittington in Round 7, Pick 24 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
