Grand theft in pick 76: the Steelers steal Lawson and grade out a B+. If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Steelers, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend.
Lawson at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. If Barrett pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
They will answer for taking offensive lineman early while edge rusher, running back and other spots went begging.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Olaivavega Ioane
In the Round 1 slot they get a blindside protector. Need was not the driver here.
Pick53
Rnd2
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Emmanuel McNeil-Warren at pick No. 53. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick76
Rnd3
Deontae Lawson
Steal is underselling it; Deontae Lawson at slot 76 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
Pick85
Rnd3
Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. in No. 85 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It fills a real need, too.
Pick99
Rnd3
Devin Moore
A quiet steal in Round 3, Pick 35: Devin Moore for less than the market said. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick121
Rnd4
Jalon Kilgore
Jalon Kilgore at the 121st pick is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick135
Rnd4
Keylan Rutledge
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 4, Pick 35 on Keylan Rutledge with edge rusher, running back and other spots unsolved.
Pick159
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
A reasonable price with a little left over, Davison Igbinosun in the 159th pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick213
Rnd6
Jeff Caldwell
Nothing to complain about; Jeff Caldwell went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick214
Rnd6
Nick Barrett
Nick Barrett at pick 214 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick224
Rnd7
Jalon Daniels
A clean, defensible pick in slot 224 with a little surplus value in Jalon Daniels. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick237
Rnd7
De'Zhaun Stribling
De'Zhaun Stribling at No. 237 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
