Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall C+
ValueC+ NeedB TradesC- FutureB-
A weekend that raised as many questions as it answered. The Steelers get a C+.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Steelers did exactly that with Tommy Eichenberg in the 122nd overall pick. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C+.

That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. With quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on offensive lineman is the choice that costs them.

Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.

Pick Analysis
Pick27 Rnd1 Kool-Aid McKinstry
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kool-Aid McKinstry. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick51 Rnd2 Zach Frazier
By-the-book stuff, Zach Frazier at No. 51 squarely in line with his ranking. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick84 Rnd3 Jermaine Burton
They did well to land Jermaine Burton in pick No. 84, just ahead of his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick87 Rnd3 Kamren Kinchens
A reach for Kamren Kinchens in the 87th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick98 Rnd3 Matt Goncalves
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Matt Goncalves adds an offensive lineman and leaves quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots untouched.
Pick104 Rnd4 Cole Bishop
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Cole Bishop at pick 104. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick119 Rnd4 Johnny Wilson
A straight-up fair deal on Johnny Wilson at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick122 Rnd4 Tommy Eichenberg
A wild overpay on Tommy Eichenberg in No. 122, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick178 Rnd6 Kalen King
The board had cheaper options than Kalen King at pick No. 178, and it noticed. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick195 Rnd6 Javontae Jean-Baptiste
No drama and no debate, Javontae Jean-Baptiste went about where he belonged in slot 195. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
