Quarterback settled, Nussmeier in the fold, and a F for the Steelers. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Steelers spent pick No. 213 on Eric Gentry, a name the board had a full 143 spots lower. The warnings were there, and the F is the bill.
So much rides on Garrett Nussmeier that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They will answer for taking offensive lineman early while edge rusher went begging.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left edge rusher open, and the grade is the bill.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
Jordyn Tyson
In the 16th overall pick they get a home-run threat at receiver. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick21
Rnd1
Garrett Nussmeier
In slot 21 they get their quarterback of the future, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Jacob Rodriguez
Jacob Rodriguez in the Round 2 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
Pick44
Rnd2
Keylan Rutledge
This one needs a full-page explanation: Keylan Rutledge in No. 44, miles early. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick53
Rnd2
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun in pick 53 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick76
Rnd3
Kyle Louis
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kyle Louis. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick85
Rnd3
Bud Clark
A real head-scratcher, Bud Clark in the 85th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick99
Rnd3
Dametrious Crownover
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went offensive lineman with Dametrious Crownover while clear needs at edge rusher sat open.
Pick103
Rnd4
Skyler Gill-Howard
Skyler Gill-Howard at the 103rd pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick121
Rnd4
Desmond Reid
They reached into another round for Desmond Reid, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
Pick135
Rnd4
Malik Benson
Malik Benson at pick 135 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick159
Rnd5
Josh Cuevas
Josh Cuevas at Round 5, Pick 21 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick213
Rnd6
Eric Gentry
Value said wait; Eric Gentry in pick No. 213 says they were not listening. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
