The Gilbert reach set the tone, and the Steelers never recovered: F. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Arik Gilbert at Round 7, Pick 23 is 113 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. The Steelers indulged a want in Tampa while a need in quarterback, safety and other spots stayed open.
Landing Hart that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
JC Latham
A reasonable price with a little left over, JC Latham in the 22nd pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick37
Rnd2
Denzel Burke
No edge and no loss on Denzel Burke in pick No. 37; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick57
Rnd2
T.J. Tampa
A curious use of the Round 2 slot. Quarterback, safety and other spots needed the pick; a defensive back in T.J. Tampa did not.
Pick75
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice at No. 75 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick86
Rnd3
T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat in slot 86 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick103
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
Good price on Smael Mondon Jr. in pick 103, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick122
Rnd4
Tyler Guyton
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Tyler Guyton adds an offensive lineman and leaves quarterback, safety and other spots untouched.
Pick139
Rnd5
Miles Frazier
Value said wait; Miles Frazier in pick 139 says they were not listening. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick159
Rnd5
Jestin Jacobs
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jestin Jacobs well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick200
Rnd6
Cam Hart
Cam Hart in the Round 6 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick205
Rnd6
Bru McCoy
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Bru McCoy at pick No. 205 is the proof. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick243
Rnd7
Arik Gilbert
They left a pile of value on the table to take Arik Gilbert this early at Round 7, Pick 23. It fills a real need, too.
