The Steelers lost the trade table, and the D tells the story. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Steelers took Akeem Dent a full 95 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. For all the activity, safety went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The Tampa pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with safety, edge rusher and other spots still on the board.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, safety very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
In pick No. 22 they get a blindside protector, though the board says they badly overpaid. Need was not the driver here.
Pick40
Rnd2
Keon Coleman
Keon Coleman at pick 40 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick54
Rnd2
T.J. Tampa
They zigged when the board said zag, taking T.J. Tampa at defensive back with safety, edge rusher and other spots open.
Pick67
Rnd3
Nazir Stackhouse
Nazir Stackhouse in the Round 3 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick89
Rnd3
Smael Mondon Jr.
Smael Mondon Jr. at slot 89 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick122
Rnd4
Joe Milton III
Joe Milton III at No. 122 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick159
Rnd5
Cam Hart
They took Cam Hart at par in the 159th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Pick180
Rnd6
Bru McCoy
Good price on Bru McCoy in pick 180, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick243
Rnd7
Akeem Dent
Value said wait; Akeem Dent in slot 243 says they were not listening. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
