A weekend the Steelers spent fighting the board, and losing. F. The Steelers went off the board in a big way for Josh Proctor, 59 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They will answer for taking offensive lineman early while quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots went begging.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not. That is an edge rusher worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with quarterback still staring back at them.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
JC Latham
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a cornerstone up front. More want than need.
Pick33
Rnd2
Nate Wiggins
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Nate Wiggins. The roster fit checks out.
Pick71
Rnd3
Brian Thomas Jr.
Brian Thomas Jr. at the 71st overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick87
Rnd3
Amarius Mims
A curious use of No. 87. Quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Amarius Mims did not.
Pick100
Rnd3
Smael Mondon Jr.
By-the-book stuff, Smael Mondon Jr. at pick No. 100 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick101
Rnd4
Junior Colson
A conviction pick on Junior Colson at the Round 4 slot that the board grades a round light. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick113
Rnd4
Khyree Jackson
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went defensive back with Khyree Jackson while clear needs at quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots sat open.
Pick129
Rnd4
Darius Robinson
The board had cheaper options than Darius Robinson at pick No. 129, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick156
Rnd5
Kamal Hadden
Value said wait; Kamal Hadden in the Round 5 slot says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick157
Rnd5
Ajani Cornelius
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Ajani Cornelius. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick161
Rnd5
Cam Hart
A wild overpay on Cam Hart in the 161st pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick168
Rnd5
Miles Frazier
They talked themselves into Miles Frazier at slot 168, and the board did not agree. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick201
Rnd6
Tre Harris
A straight-up fair deal on Tre Harris at pick 201, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick214
Rnd6
Nelson Ceaser
Nelson Ceaser in the 214th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick218
Rnd6
Tony Grimes
Value with a capital V on Tony Grimes in pick No. 218, a genuine coup. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
Pick227
Rnd7
Theo Johnson
They paid a round early for Theo Johnson in the Round 7 slot, more than the board wanted. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick244
Rnd7
Josh Proctor
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Josh Proctor well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
