Draft Grade — Steelers

Flashes of a plan, unevenly executed. Steelers: C+. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Steelers spent pick 84 on Tommy Eichenberg, a name the board had a full 61 spots lower. It nets out a thoroughly average C+.
It is not that Goncalves is a bad player; it is that the Steelers had louder needs to answer first. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
They reloaded the coverage unit in bulk.
Hit on Cooper DeJean and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Cooper DeJean
In the 20th overall pick they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value.
Pick51
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
Zach Frazier in Round 2, Pick 19 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick84
Rnd3
Tommy Eichenberg
A real head-scratcher, Tommy Eichenberg in the 84th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick98
Rnd3
Matt Goncalves
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Matt Goncalves adds an offensive lineman and leaves quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots untouched.
