Stone should have been long gone. The Steelers pounced, and earned a B-. You could see the war room lean forward. David Stone at pick No. 82 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
The Green reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
The Bolden pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at wide receiver. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
KJ Bolden
They bypassed pressing needs at wide receiver to take KJ Bolden, a safety that was not the priority.
Pick47
Rnd2
Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa while clear needs at wide receiver sat open.
Pick77
Rnd3
Chris Peal
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Chris Peal adds a cornerback and leaves wide receiver untouched.
Pick82
Rnd3
David Stone
David Stone at the 82nd overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick148
Rnd5
DJ Lagway
They jumped the gun on DJ Lagway, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick156
Rnd5
Jordan Marshall
A conviction pick on Jordan Marshall at No. 156 that the board grades a round light. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick163
Rnd5
AJ Green
A swing that ignored the value entirely, AJ Green well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick167
Rnd5
Xavier Lucas
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Lucas at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
Pick190
Rnd6
Robert Fitzgerald
Robert Fitzgerald in slot 190 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Not a spot anyone had flagged, which makes it a head-scratcher.
Pick193
Rnd6
Blake Frazier
They let Blake Frazier come to them and pounced at No. 193. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick202
Rnd6
Francis Brewu
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Francis Brewu. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick223
Rnd7
Kayin Lee
They barely believed it either: Kayin Lee still on the board at pick 223. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
Pick224
Rnd7
Eli Finley
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Eli Finley. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick231
Rnd7
Avery Johnson
Avery Johnson at the 231st pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick234
Rnd7
Edrees Farooq
They went early on Edrees Farooq in Round 7, Pick 13, and the value did not follow. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
Pick239
Rnd7
Christian Alliegro
Christian Alliegro at the 239th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
