The Steelers kept it disciplined and banked a B. It is a puzzling start. The Steelers had edge rusher and running back to solve and reached instead for Kage Casey, an offensive lineman, at the 135th pick. The bottom line is a respectable B.
Ioane at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Chris Bell
In the 26th overall pick they get a difference-maker at receiver. A real need, handled.
Pick53
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
The board had Olaivavega Ioane higher than pick No. 53, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick60
Rnd2
Eli Stowers
No edge and no loss on Eli Stowers in No. 60; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick79
Rnd3
Keionte Scott
A tidy bit of business in slot 79, where Keionte Scott graded well above the range. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick85
Rnd3
Skyler Bell
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Skyler Bell. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick99
Rnd3
Harold Perkins Jr.
Harold Perkins Jr. at the 99th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The roster fit checks out.
Pick121
Rnd4
Trinidad Chambliss
A reasonable price with a little left over, Trinidad Chambliss in the Round 4 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick135
Rnd4
Kage Casey
A surprising call. With edge rusher and running back still to address, they spent the 135th pick on Kage Casey, an offensive lineman they were not short of.
Pick159
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun slid further than he should have, and Round 5, Pick 21 is lovely value for the cornerback. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick213
Rnd6
Peyton Bowen
Peyton Bowen at the 213th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick214
Rnd6
Brett Norfleet
They paid sticker price for Brett Norfleet in the Round 6 slot, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick224
Rnd7
J. Michael Sturdivant
J. Michael Sturdivant in No. 224 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick231
Rnd7
PJ Williams
No drama and no debate, PJ Williams went about where he belonged in pick 231. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick237
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
The board had cheaper options than Jordan Hall at slot 237, and it noticed. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
