Draft Grade — Steelers

FutureD-
The Steelers left with their quarterback, and a F to match. The tape said wait; the Steelers did not. Elijah Roberts went at the Round 5 slot, a good 30 picks before the board was ready. A weekend to file away and forget, and an F to match.
So much rides on Cam Ward that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Getting Hampton where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Cam Ward
In the Round 1 slot they get a passer to set the clock by. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick45
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
The board had Omarion Hampton higher than slot 45, and the running back fell to them anyway. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick46
Rnd2
Jayden Higgins
They went early on Jayden Higgins in Round 2, Pick 14, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick83
Rnd3
Mason Taylor
Nothing to complain about; Mason Taylor went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Pick151
Rnd5
Elijah Roberts
They left a pile of value on the table to take Elijah Roberts this early at pick No. 151. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick185
Rnd6
CJ West
No edge and no loss on CJ West in the 185th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick229
Rnd7
Desmond Watson
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Desmond Watson. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
