FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Steelers, and a B to prove it. Boards are made to be trusted, and the Steelers shredded theirs for Edefuan Ulofoshio. He came off 26 spots early, and the room will hear about it. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Smith at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
The Steelers indulged a want in Goncalves while a need in quarterback and running back stayed open.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick36
Rnd2
Cooper DeJean
They read the board right and Cooper DeJean was the payoff at the Round 2 slot. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick66
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran in No. 66 is fair value, right on his grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick71
Rnd3
Devontez Walker
Devontez Walker at slot 71 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick78
Rnd3
Austin Booker
A straight-up fair deal on Austin Booker at Round 3, Pick 14, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick84
Rnd3
Mike Sainristil
Mike Sainristil at pick No. 84 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick98
Rnd3
Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray in the 98th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick104
Rnd4
Matt Goncalves
Of all the spots to shop, they chose offensive lineman. Matt Goncalves in slot 104 leaves quarterback and running back for later.
Pick119
Rnd4
Javon Foster
A curious use of pick 119. Quarterback and running back needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Javon Foster did not.
Pick120
Rnd4
Elijah Jones
Elijah Jones at the Round 4 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick126
Rnd4
Justin Eboigbe
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Justin Eboigbe. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick138
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
They liked Luke McCaffrey enough to skip the value, taking him in the 138th overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick139
Rnd5
Jarrian Jones
Good price on Jarrian Jones in the 139th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick157
Rnd5
Khristian Boyd
A real head-scratcher, Khristian Boyd in pick No. 157 is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick161
Rnd5
Ainias Smith
A wide receiver of that caliber at Round 5, Pick 25 is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick169
Rnd5
Malik Mustapha
They took Malik Mustapha at par in slot 169, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick178
Rnd6
Tanor Bortolini
A reach on Tanor Bortolini in pick No. 178; the board had better options right there. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick195
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
The board had cheaper options than Jared Wiley at the 195th pick, and it noticed. The roster fit checks out.
Pick202
Rnd6
Logan Lee
Logan Lee at No. 202 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick210
Rnd6
Edefuan Ulofoshio
Edefuan Ulofoshio at Round 6, Pick 35 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It fills a real need, too.
Pick219
Rnd6
Tylan Grable
Tylan Grable at the 219th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
