Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB TradesC+ FutureB
Grand theft in the 240th overall pick: the Steelers steal Jones and grade out a B-.

The Steelers spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Elijah Jones, the No. 193 name on the board, in pick 240. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.

For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Steelers indulged a want in Goncalves while a need in interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots stayed open.

The cost of the Tupuola-Fetui reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Brian Thomas Jr.
In pick No. 20 they get a home-run threat at receiver. A real need, handled.
Pick65 Rnd3 Javon Bullard
Javon Bullard in the 65th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick84 Rnd3 Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at slot 84 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick119 Rnd4 Matt Goncalves
A want over a need in No. 119: Matt Goncalves adds an offensive lineman while interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick120 Rnd4 Josh Newton
By-the-book stuff, Josh Newton at the Round 4 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick142 Rnd5 Jordan Travis
They jumped the gun on Jordan Travis, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick166 Rnd5 Luke McCaffrey
A straight-up fair deal on Luke McCaffrey at Round 5, Pick 30, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick178 Rnd6 Zion Tupuola-Fetui
Zion Tupuola-Fetui at the 178th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick195 Rnd6 Steele Chambers
Steele Chambers in the 195th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick240 Rnd7 Elijah Jones
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Elijah Jones in pick No. 240, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
